I Must Be in a Sentimental Mood This Week — Let Me Tell You About Mrs. K

2026 06 22

Some weeks in this business feel bigger than others. This is one of those weeks. I’ve been sitting with some stories on my heart, and I think it’s time to share them — because this work is about so much more than pretty photos.

Let me tell you about Mrs. K.

I met Mrs. K years ago when we both worked at Cracker Barrel. If you’ve ever worked there — especially back in the day — you know it was no joke. Belt required. Dark socks. A crisp crease in your apron. It was a whole thing. But even in the middle of all that seriousness, Mrs. K was the bright spot. She had the biggest smile and a laugh that filled the room. She was always cracking jokes, always making the shift a little lighter. She talked about her kids constantly — you could hear the pride in her voice every single time.

Life moved on the way it does. We went our separate ways, took different paths, got different jobs. But we stayed connected on Facebook — that quiet, scrolling kind of connection where you watch someone’s life unfold without always saying a word. I watched her become a grandmother. I watched her get married. She watched me have another baby and start a business.

Then in November 2023, she reached out to book a session.

We finally sat down together in October 2024, and it felt like no time had passed at all. We caught up about everything — her new husband, her job, her kids, her grandkids. She was so proud of all of them. We laughed the whole session about the old Cracker Barrel days and how far we’d both come. She was proud of herself. And she should have been.

In March of this year, I received a message from her husband asking for the gallery password. He had forgotten it.

Mrs. K had passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack.

I sat with that message for a long time.

Those photos — the ones we laughed through, the ones where she was radiant and strong and so fully herself — are now something her family gets to keep forever. Her kids get to look at those images and see their mom the way she saw herself that day. Beautiful. Powerful. Proud.

I know some women hesitate to book a session because they worry about what the photos will look like, or what their kids might think someday. But here’s what I want you to hear: so many of these images are simply stunning portraits of you. Not sexualized. Not scandalous. Just you — captured at a moment when you chose to show up for yourself.

Your kids will look at those photos one day and think, look how gorgeous my mom was. Look how strong she was.

Please don’t wait for “someday.” Book the session. Do it for you — and for the people who love you.

To Mrs. K — thank you for trusting me with that afternoon. I’m so honored those photos exist. 🤍
